Celebrating Brisbane’s Sister Cities during Chinese New Year
Brisbane has seven active Sister City relationships:
- Kobe (since July 1985)
- Auckland (since August 1988)
- Shenzhen (since June 1992)
- Semarang (since January 1993)
- Kaohsiung (since September 1997)
- Daejeon (since June 2002)
- Chongqing (since October 2005)
Brisbane’s Sister City relationships allow us to work with overseas municipal governments, share ideas, showcase Brisbane’s achievements and learn best practice. Through our Sister Cities, we build business and professional networks that help Brisbane based companies meet potential overseas business partners, attract investment, create jobs and grow export revenue
The Sister City relationships are enhanced through volunteer committees chaired by prominent and influential members of the local business community. Sister City initiatives include:
International Visitation Program - identifies and develops business and trade opportunities between Brisbane and other international cities.
Staff Exchange Program –each year Brisbane hosts one or more staff members from each Sister City and sends a qualified Council employee overseas to present and learn from best-practice examples of municipal governance.
Honorary Ambassadors and Consultants Program - appointed by the City on the recommendation of the Lord Mayor and/or CEO, ambassadors promote Brisbane both nationally and internationally, identifying business opportunities and potential investments in areas they travel to.
Our Chinese Sister Cities have hosted official and business delegations from Brisbane. Their Mayors led large delegations to Brisbane for the Asia Pacific Cities Summit held here in August-September 2007. Brisbane City Council works actively with Austrade and other strategic partners to identify and qualify export and investment opportunities in China. Brisbane based companies are now pursuing dozens of exciting commercial opportunities in Chongqing and Shenzhen, which will generate jobs, exports and investment for our region.
